Welcome to the 2009 Essex Sports Awards; in its fourth year, this is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the best in sport in Essex. The people we acknowledge this evening were selected from hundreds of nominations from a variety of sports across the county.
2009 saw the Ashes return to England for both men and women, successes in the World Athletics and Swimming Championships and the Great Britain Men's Hockey team become European Champions, to name but a few. The road to London 2012 just under 1,000 days away looks rosy for our athletes. This success is the result of a team effort, from the athletes themselves to the many people who support them to make it happen.
This evening is an opportunity to recognise and congratulate the very best in sport in Essex and to those men and women who help them make it happen. Also, this evening could not happen without our sponsors and we thank them for their invaluable support.
