Skanska School of the Year
Nominations
- St Martins School
-
St Martins School have been working tirelessly this past year at all levels of sporting participation. As part of the schools drive to improve healthy and active lifestyles in young people, all pupils at the school study PE to GCSE level and this along with their dedication to extra-curricular activities has formed the basis for achieving their goal of each student completing 5 hours of physical activity per week. The schools heavy investment into extra-curricular activities has seen them compete in over 500 sporting fixtures this past year, with many of their teams competing and being successful at national, regional and county competitions. This level of excellence is a great achievement on its own but the school has also been very active with more grass roots levels of sport. For example in conjunction with Shenfields School Sports Partnership they promote participation in less traditional school sports such as Cheerleading, Aerobics and Karate. St Martins School could not offer the huge variety of activities without the support of the staff, parents and their partner clubs, all of whom have contributed to this nomination.
Winner!
- Moulsham High School
-
The students at Moulsham high have been giving back to the community this year, with the successful introduction of their innovative project; "Recycled". This project aimed to inspire young students to becoming more environmentally aware by recycling unwanted bikes, carrying out safety checks, repairing and selling them on. The project has not only encouraged recycling at a young age but has also inspired students to cycle as a part of everyday life. The scheme, which started with one rusty bike, has now raised £850 which has been donated to charities and helped to sustain the projects future by investing in new tools and improving the workshop. Off of the back of this project the school has set up a race team that has competed in the Mud, Sweat and Gears mountain bike series again encouraging active lifestyles within their students. Moulsham High School feel that this project has been so successful that they are planning to help other local schools set up similar projects and get more young people involved in cycling.
